To create a poll on Telegram, open the group or channel, tap the attachment icon next to the message field and choose "Poll". Type your question, add the answer options, pick the settings you want and send it. According to Telegram, polls are created in groups and channels; they aren't meant for one-on-one chats. Telegram doesn't list Premium as a condition for polls.

## How to create a poll in a Telegram group

1. Open the group and tap the attachment icon next to the message field.
2. Choose "Poll".
3. Write the question and the answer options.
4. Tick the settings you need and send the poll to the chat.

You can pin the poll message so everyone sees it and members get a notification. To start the group itself, see [how to create a Telegram group](https://shiba-bank.com/en/guides/create-telegram-group).

## How to create a poll in a Telegram channel

The steps are the same: open the channel, tap the attachment icon, choose "Poll" and fill in the question and the options. A poll in a channel is a post, so it is created by the owner or by an admin allowed to post messages. Subscribers don't create polls, they vote in them.

Admin rights are covered in [channel admins](https://shiba-bank.com/en/guides/channel-admins), opening comments under a post in [comments in a Telegram channel](https://shiba-bank.com/en/guides/channel-comments), and starting a channel in [how to create a channel](https://shiba-bank.com/en/guides/create-telegram-channel).

## Kinds of polls

Telegram's description of what a poll can be:

- **Anonymous or visible.** At first every poll was anonymous: nobody sees who voted for what. Telegram later added polls with visible votes — made in a group, they let everyone see who answered what. Anonymous polls are still there.
- **Multiple answers.** People can pick more than one option — handy for scheduling or choosing several songs for a party.
- **Quiz mode.** Such a poll has a correct answer. It suits trivia games and exams, and a correct answer is celebrated with confetti.

## What's new in polls in 2026

In its update of 31 March 2026, Telegram added a whole set of poll options. Among them:

- photos, videos or a location attached to a question and its options;
- a description that explains what the poll is about;
- letting members suggest new options in a poll that's already running;
- voter information next to each option;
- turning off revoting, so results stay fixed;
- shuffling the options separately for each member;
- a time limit for the poll and results hidden until the time is up;
- viewing the results without voting (for the creator);
- quizzes with several correct answers.

Past and active polls now have their own tab on the profile of a group or channel. If you create a poll with visible votes in a group, you get a notification each time someone answers. To see the new options, update the app.

## How to close a poll

According to Telegram's documentation, a poll can be closed early, after which nobody can vote. Where the close button is depends on the app version; look in the menu of the poll message.
