There are two ways to advertise in Telegram channels. The first is Telegram Ads, the official platform: you write a short message, pick the channels it appears in and pay in cryptocurrency. The second is to agree a deal with a channel's owner and buy a promotional post from them. The first follows Telegram's own rules; in the second, you and the owner set the terms.

## Advertising with Telegram Ads

Telegram Ads is Telegram's platform for sponsored messages. According to its description, they are shown in public channels with more than 1,000 subscribers, and anyone with a Telegram account can place an ad.

1. Open [ads.telegram.org](https://ads.telegram.org/) and log in with your phone number. Telegram sends a message to confirm the login.
2. Choose who the ads are placed for: your personal account or an organization. An organization is created by the owner of a channel or group, and then all admins of that chat can manage its ads.
3. Click «Create Ad» and fill in the title, text and link. The text is up to 160 characters.
4. Set a CPM, the price for a thousand views, and a budget. The ad runs until the budget is used up.
5. Pick the channels where it should appear by entering their links, for example `t.me/durov`.
6. Submit it for review. While the ad is «In Review», Telegram's team checks it; if it is declined, the platform shows the reason and a link to the rules.

The platform reports how many times the ad was viewed and how many people joined the channel or started the bot afterwards. Targeting cannot be changed once the ad is created: to change the channels, create a similar ad.

> **Important:** Telegram shows sponsored messages only in certain countries, and Telegram Premium subscribers do not see them. Promotional posts that channel admins publish themselves are not part of the platform, and Premium does not hide them.

## What you can promote with Telegram Ads

The ad may only link to a channel or a bot on Telegram, written as `t.me/name` or `@name`. Links to outside websites are not accepted.

Under the platform's rules, the channel or bot needs a profile picture and a full description, and a channel must have at least one post from the two weeks before the review. The language of the ad should match the language of the channel it is shown in. Ads for services that inflate followers or other metrics are banned. The full list is in [Telegram's ad policies](https://ads.telegram.org/guidelines).

## How Telegram Ads is paid

The platform takes payment in cryptocurrency: its home page says you can pay in Gram, the coin formerly known as Toncoin. Owners of channels and bots can also pay for ads with Stars from their channel or bot balance at a 30% discount — see [advertising on Telegram for Stars](https://shiba-bank.com/en/guides/telegram-ads-stars).

## Buying a post from a channel owner

This route suits you if you want one particular channel. You write to the owner, who names the price, the date and how long the post stays in the feed. Telegram does not take part in such a deal.

What to check before you pay:

- **Views on recent posts.** The view counter is visible under every post, and you can compare it with the subscriber count yourself.
- **The channel's statistics.** Only the owner and admins can see them, so ask for screenshots: subscriber growth, sources of new followers, views by hour. The graphs are explained in [Telegram channel statistics](https://shiba-bank.com/en/guides/channel-statistics).
- **Sudden jumps in growth.** Subscribers brought in by a growth service do not read posts, so views stay low.

Once the post is out, compare its views with the statistics and look at the sources of new followers.

> **Important:** You never need to share login codes or passwords to place an ad. If an intermediary asks for a code from Telegram or access to your account, it is a scam.

## If your audience is in Russia

Under part 17 of article 18.1 of Russia's Law on Advertising, online advertising may be distributed once an advertising data operator has assigned it an identifier (erid). Missing identifiers and missed deadlines carry administrative liability. The details are in [Roskomnadzor's explanations](https://rkn.gov.ru/treatments/chasto-zadavaemye-voprosy/p1575/) (in Russian).

## How much does Telegram advertising cost

There is no single price. On Telegram Ads you name the price per thousand views yourself, and for a post from an owner you pay what you agree.

Stars can be bought in the Shiba Bank bot: they go to your Telegram account or to the bot's wallet.
