Last seen on Telegram: what the statuses mean and how to hide yours
What "last seen recently", "within a week", "within a month" and "a long time ago" mean on Telegram, how to hide your last seen time, and why hiding yours also hides other people's.
Telegram shows "last seen recently", "within a week", "within a month" or "a long time ago" instead of an exact time when the person's exact last seen time is hidden from you: either they hid it from you, or you hid yours. "Recently" means anywhere from a second to 2–3 days ago. "A long time ago" means more than a month ago — or that the person has blocked you.
What "last seen recently" and "a long time ago" mean
Telegram has four approximate statuses. Here is what they mean according to Telegram's FAQ:
| Status | When the person was last on Telegram |
|---|---|
| last seen recently | from 1 second to 2–3 days ago |
| last seen within a week | from 2–3 to 7 days ago |
| last seen within a month | from 6–7 days to a month ago |
| last seen a long time ago | more than a month ago |
The edges are fuzzy: Telegram itself writes "2–3 days" and "6–7 days". When a person shares their last seen time with you, you see the exact one instead: "online", "last seen today at 9:40 PM", "last seen yesterday at 9:40 PM" or a date.
Why you see "last seen recently" instead of an exact time
There are two reasons:
- The person hid their last seen time from you. Then nothing shows you the exact time, not even Premium: a time hidden from you stays hidden.
- You hid your own last seen time. The rule is mutual: you don't see the exact time of people you don't share yours with. If you hid it from everyone, you see only "recently", "within a week" and so on for everyone.
If your own setting is the reason, there are two ways out: show your last seen time or subscribe to Premium.
"Last seen a long time ago": away for a month or blocked
It means one of two things:
- the person hasn't opened Telegram for more than a month;
- the person has blocked you. Blocked users are always shown "last seen a long time ago".
One status doesn't prove a block: the person may simply have been away. A more reliable check: open their profile from another account, or ask a mutual friend to look. If that account sees "recently" or "online" and you see "a long time ago", you've most likely been blocked.
Accounts that stay unused are deleted: if you don't come online for at least 18 months, Telegram deletes the account along with its messages and data. The period can be changed in Settings.
How to hide your last seen time on Telegram
- Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Last Seen & Online.
- Choose who can see your last seen time: "Everybody", "My Contacts" or "Nobody".
- If needed, add exceptions — single people or whole groups: those who always see your time and those who never do. Exceptions override the choice above.
Menu names can differ slightly between app versions and languages.
When you still show as online
The last seen rules cover your "online" status too: only people you share your time with can see it. According to Telegram's FAQ, there are exceptions — for about 30 seconds you appear online to someone if you:
- send them a message in a private chat or in a group you're both in;
- read their message in a private chat;
- send them a "typing…" status in a private chat or in a group you're both in.
If you do none of this, someone you hide your time from will never see you online. Blocking them is another way, as Telegram's FAQ notes.
Read time
In private chats Telegram shows the exact time your message was read, but only for 7 days; then the time is deleted. Read time has its own privacy switch on the same screen. It lets you hide your read time from people you hide your last seen from. You then stop seeing their read time too, unless you have Premium.
Why hiding yours hides theirs — and how Premium changes it
By default the rule is mutual: if you hide your last seen and read time, you don't see them for others. With Telegram Premium the rule is lifted: you hide yours and still see the last seen and read times of people who share theirs with you. Telegram calls it one-way last seen and read times. There are two conditions:
- you see someone's time only if they haven't hidden it from you — Premium doesn't unlock a time that's hidden from you;
- your time stays hidden from everyone you hid it from — Premium subscribers included.
Bots and websites that promise to reveal a hidden last seen time can't do it: Telegram states that a hidden time stays hidden even from Premium subscribers. Never give such services your login code or access to your account — more in scams on Telegram.
You can get Premium for 3, 6 or 12 months in the Shiba Bank bot — for yourself or a friend by @username, with crypto or wallet Stars. No login code is needed. Prices are on the Premium page; step by step in how to buy Telegram Premium.
Frequently asked questions
What does "last seen recently" mean on Telegram?
The person was last on Telegram anywhere from a second to 2–3 days ago, and the exact time is hidden — by them from you, or by you from them. It's an approximate status.
Does "last seen a long time ago" mean I'm blocked?
It means either more than a month without coming online or a block: blocked users are always shown this status. One status doesn't prove a block — compare it with what another account sees.
Why can't I see someone's exact last seen on Telegram?
Either they hid it from you, or you hid yours — Telegram doesn't show exact times to people you don't share yours with. If it's your setting, show your last seen time or subscribe to Premium. If they hid it from you, nothing reveals it.
How do I hide my last seen on Telegram?
Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Last Seen & Online and choose "My Contacts" or "Nobody", adding exceptions if needed. Read time is hidden with its own switch on the same screen.
Can I hide my last seen and still see other people's?
Only with Telegram Premium: it shows the last seen and read times of people who haven't hidden them from you, even when you hide yours. It doesn't open a time that's hidden from you.
