Private Telegram channel: how to make one and how to join

What a private Telegram channel is, how to make a channel private, how to require join requests, how to join a private channel, and the difference between making a channel private and deleting it.

A private Telegram channel has no public username, so it does not show up in Telegram search. People can join only through an invite link or if the owner adds them. To make a channel private, choose the private type when you create it, or later open the channel's settings → Channel Type and switch it to private.

What a private channel is

Telegram's own FAQ puts the difference simply: public channels have a username, anyone can find them in search and join; private channels are closed societies, and you need to be added by the owner or get an invite link.

Private invite links have the form t.me/+ followed by a string of characters; this format is described in Telegram's developer documentation.

How to make a private Telegram channel

A new channel. Tap the new message button, choose New Channel, enter a name, and when Telegram asks for the channel type, select Private. Telegram gives you an invite link. The full walk-through is in how to create a Telegram channel.

An existing public channel. Open the channel's settings → Channel Type and choose Private. The public t.me/name link goes away, and new people can join only through an invite link. People already in the channel stay.

Going the other way, from private to public, uses the same screen: you set a public username.

How to close a Telegram channel: make it private or delete it

"Close a channel" can mean two different things:

  • Make it private: remove it from search and let people in only by invitation. The channel and its posts stay.
  • Delete it entirely. Per Telegram's FAQ, the owner can delete a channel completely; look for the delete option in the channel's settings. Telegram's developer documentation notes that a channel that is too large cannot be deleted; the limit is currently about 1,000 members and may change.

Deleting cannot be undone. If you are unsure, make the channel private instead.

How to make a channel private with join requests

By default, anyone with the invite link joins at once. Telegram lets you turn on approval for a link: a person sees a button to send a join request, and an admin can look at their public profile photos and bio and approve or dismiss the request.

  1. Open the channel's settings and find the invite links section (Channel Type → Manage Invite Links; the names differ a little between app versions).
  2. Create an additional link and turn on admin approval. Telegram offers this setting for any additional link.
  3. Share that link. Admins review each request.

You can also set an expiry date and a usage limit on a link, and give additional links names so you can tell them apart. A link you no longer want can be revoked, after which nobody can join through it.

To limit copying, the owner can turn on content protection on the Channel Type screen, which restricts forwarding and saving. It lowers the risk but does not guarantee anything: someone can still photograph the screen with another device.

How to stop forwarding of messages in a Telegram channel

Forwarding and saving are limited by the content protection setting, which Telegram's blog calls Restrict Saving Content. The channel owner turns it on: open the channel's info page → Channel Type and look for this option (the label may read a little differently in your app's language). An administrator who is not the owner can't turn it on: according to Telegram's documentation, only the owner can.

What it gives, according to Telegram:

  • messages from the channel can't be forwarded;
  • subscribers can't save media from posts;
  • screenshots are blocked.

The protection works in a private channel and in a public one, but it is no absolute guarantee: someone can always photograph the screen with another device. For personal chats there is a similar feature, "Disable Sharing", which according to Telegram's blog of 1 March 2026 is available to users with Premium.

How to join a private Telegram channel

You cannot search for a private channel by name; that is the point of it. There are two ways in:

  1. An invite link. Get it from the owner or an admin and open it in Telegram. If approval is on, tap the request button and wait for the decision.
  2. Being added by the owner. The channel's owner can add people directly.

If a link does not work, it was probably revoked, expired, or hit its usage limit; ask an admin for a new one. Sites and bots that promise to "unlock" someone else's private channel are scams: the only way in is an invitation. More in Telegram scams.

A private channel with a paid subscription

A private channel can also charge for entry: the author creates an invite link with a monthly fee in Stars, and the subscriber pays in Stars once a month. Setting it up and cancelling are covered in paid channel subscriptions.

If you are short of Stars for a subscription, you can buy them in the Shiba Bank bot.
