Telegram spam block: why it happens and how to lift it
What a spam block on Telegram means: why an account gets limited, what you can still send, how long the limit lasts and how to appeal through @SpamBot if it was a mistake.
A "spam block" is the usual name for the limit Telegram puts on an account after spam reports. A limited account can message only people who have its number saved as a contact, and can reply to anyone who writes first. Per Telegram's spam FAQ, a first offence means a limit of a few days, and repeated ones mean longer periods. Telegram does not lift a limit early, but if you are sure it is a mistake, you can dispute it through the official @SpamBot.
What a spam block means
Telegram itself calls it a limit. The chain is: users report spam, the reports go to moderators, and if the moderators confirm unwanted messages to strangers or spam in groups, the account is limited for a time.
In a private chat you will see a message like: "Sorry, you can only send messages to mutual contacts at the moment." That is the text of the Telegram app itself for this case.
What stays available, per Telegram's FAQ:
- messaging people who have your number saved as a contact;
- replying to anyone who messaged you first.
This is not a lost account: you can keep using it, and only messages to strangers are restricted.
What gets an account limited
Telegram's FAQ puts it plainly: username search is not a tool for making new friends. People report:
- messages to strangers that they did not expect;
- ads, links, invite links to groups or channels, random photos;
- anything to do with commerce or online popularity;
- adding people to groups they did not want to join.
In groups, according to the same FAQ, moderators are more lenient than with private messages, but anyone who posts spam or unsolicited advertising is limited there too. Group admins can also report spam.
How long a spam block lasts
According to Telegram's FAQ:
- A first offence: a limit of "a few days or so".
- Repeated offences: longer periods of limitation.
- Early release: Telegram does not offer it. To the question "please release me now", the FAQ answers no.
The FAQ gives no exact end date. It does not use the word "permanent" either: it says only that repeats lead to longer periods.
How to lift a spam block or appeal it
- Open @SpamBot. By its own description it is the official Spam Info Bot by Telegram and helps users with limited accounts regain full functionality.
- If you are sure you broke no rules, Telegram's FAQ tells you to contact @SpamBot: that is how a wrongful limit is disputed.
- While the limit is on, do not message strangers, do not send links in bulk and do not add anyone to groups without asking. A repeat extends the term.
The FAQ names no other way. Telegram does not mention any paid way to lift a limit; if someone offers one, never hand over your login code or password. Common schemes are covered in Telegram scams. Other official Telegram bots are listed in official Telegram bots.
A new account that is limited at once
Telegram's FAQ answers this separately: some numbers are limited automatically, because of what the previous owner of the number did or because the number is virtual (VOIP). Contact @SpamBot in that case too. If you cannot get into the account because the code does not arrive, see Telegram login code or call not arriving.
Paid messages and Premium
Telegram's spam FAQ does not say that a Premium subscription or paid messages in Stars lift the limit. The only way it names is @SpamBot. Paid messages are a setting on the receiving side: a person charges Stars for incoming messages from people who are not in their contacts. More in paid messages in Telegram.
Stars, gifts and the Shiba Bank bot
Telegram's FAQ describes only the limit on messaging. The Shiba Bank bot sends Stars and Premium by @username and never asks for a login code or a password, so it does not need access to your account. If the trouble with the account is more serious than a spam block, see how to recover a Telegram account.
