Telegram video message not recording or lagging: what to check
What to check when a Telegram round video will not record, will not send, lags or looks blurry: camera and microphone access, the button, restrictions, updates, storage and connection.
If a Telegram video message will not record, check three things first: that the app has access to your camera and microphone, that the button next to the message field is switched to video, and that the other person or the group has not blocked video messages. If a round video lags or looks blurry, the usual suspects are an old app version, low storage and a weak connection. Here are the checks, in order.
Video message will not record: what to check
- The button is in video mode. Tap the microphone icon next to the message field once; it switches to the camera. Hold the camera icon to record. How it works is described in Telegram video messages.
- Camera and microphone access. On iPhone, open Settings, go to Privacy & Security, tap Camera and then Microphone, and make sure Telegram is switched on in the list. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Telegram, Permissions, and allow Camera and Microphone. Menu names can differ by system version and phone maker.
- The icon is faded and does not respond. Telegram Premium subscribers can limit who may send them voice and video messages; for people who are not allowed, the microphone and camera buttons fade out. To the sender it looks like "recording does not work", but the reason is the other person's setting.
- A group restriction. Group admins can allow or forbid different kinds of messages for members, including voice and video messages. If recording fails in one group but works elsewhere, check the members' permissions in that group.
- Length. A video message is a video of up to one minute.
Video message lags
- Update Telegram. In January 2024 Telegram fixed a bug on iPhone where the first video message after an app update could be recorded without sound (it is listed in Telegram's bug tracker, fixed in version 10.6.4). Updates also bring picture and recording improvements.
- Check how videos load. By default video messages download and play automatically, and you can change this in the settings. On a slow connection a video simply takes longer to load.
- Clear some storage. Telegram lets you clear its cache without logging out: Settings, Data and Storage, Storage Usage, Clear cache. If the phone is almost full, a video may not be saved.
- Restart the app and the phone. This is a general step, not specific to Telegram, but it often helps when recording hangs.
Poor video quality
Telegram compresses video messages and sends them while you record, which makes them fast, but the picture still depends on how you shoot. What helps:
- Film in good light. For the dark there is a front flash: lock the recording by swiping up and tap the flash icon.
- Hold the phone steady. In January 2024 Telegram improved recording on iPhone: a clearer picture and less camera shake.
- With the rear camera you can pinch to zoom while recording.
Video message will not send
- Check the connection. Telegram starts sending while you are still recording. On a weak connection the message can sit unsent; wait, or switch to another network.
- Check who you are writing to. If the other person has restricted voice and video messages (Premium), or the group forbids them, a round video cannot be sent. Send a text message instead.
- Record again. If the message is stuck, delete it and record a new one.
If nothing helps
